Description

What is Aikido?

Aikido is a Japanese martial art that uses an opponent's energy against them rather than directly confronting it. O-Sensei Morihei Ueshiba developed this martial art in the early 20th century, emphasizing harmony, balance, and non-resistance, making it distinct from many other martial arts that rely on strikes or brute force.

What do we do during training?

These sessions are suitable for people of all ages and abilities. No previous martial art experience is required. We accept new members at any time, not just at the beginning of the academic year (so don’t worry if you miss us at the Freshers’ Fair!). Even if you have a casual interest in Aikido, we recommend attending one of the sessions to give it a go. You can contact the Aikido Club in advance, or just turn up to one of the sessions and take it from there.

We teach traditional Aikido self-defense techniques and exercises in a variety of ways, from classical hand-to-hand attacks to exercises with weapons. The weapons we use are the katana (samurai sword) or bokken (wooden sword), jo (wooden staff) and tanto (wooden knife). The weapons exercises lead to a greater understanding of hand-to-hand techniques.
