I’m Tom, I’m a first-generation student studying English Literature, Philosophy and Anthropology. I like plants, brutalist architecture and politics. I’m passionate about making sure that the SU works well in the interests of the students who need it most.
I have been a part-time student staff member of the student union for two academic years running, which has given me a keen insight into the organisational structures, functions and purposes of the student union. But it’s not just knowledge of the SU that I’ve gained, it has developed my skill to work as a part of a team, to problem solve, and to communicate with members of staff within the SU – all skills that will come in handy as a member of the board of trustees.
My work history in the SU, doing admin, bar tasks and student voice roles means I know first hand the work the SU does and can offer both a student and a student-staff perspective to the board that can help the SU to think about delivery and communication.
My interests in public policy, politics and higher education mean I’m acutely aware of the difficult environment the sector is operating in. I support the SU as an organisation and want to ensure that in these difficult times it not only lives up to its legal responsibilities as charity, but also lives up to its core values – championing every Durham student.
