About yourself

I’m a second-year English Literature student from Castledawson who is passionate about ensuring students receive the most out of their university experience and students’ union. I understand the value of community and believe the SU should have a keen focus on fostering and creating this environment at Durham.

Relevant Experience

This year I have been acting as both the Vice President and Communities Chair (EDI Committee) for Cuth’s JCR which has provided me insight and relationships with a range of communities within Durham. The role of VP also exposed me to long-term strategic planning, general budgeting and event organising.

As VP I was also secretary for the Board of Trustees for Cuth’s JCR and familiarised myself with aspects of charity law and legal compliance. Furthermore, having student voices on these committees to evaluate the success of strategies they employ and/or their short term impacts.

Last year I assisted with work supporting disabled students at Durham and have a longtime involvement with a charity that supports families and children with autism. I initiated the first peer-led student welfare project in my secondary school and led this initiative to provide mental health awareness and signposting for two years with a team of 12 other students.

As the current Chair of SU Assembly, I am keenly aware of the current policies and functions of the students’ union as well as places where we may be falling short and believe strongly in taking accountability and making actionable change.

I also spent a year working in secondary education as a tutor, one-on-one support and temporary librarian which instilled in me its importance .

The Students’ Union to operate in the best interests of students must ensure it can meaningfully measure these successes and must focus on evaluating its stasis within the university and amongst students.
