Tell students about yourself
Hi, I’m Javis, a Hong Kong first-year student reading BA Geography. I’m also part of the Student Voice Committee (SVC), Geographical Society, and DUHKPASS Public Affairs Department. Being an academic ambassador during Sixth Form, I worked closely with academic staff and emphasized on non-scholastic learning through academic showcases. I’m involved in SVC consultative meetings, which centre around redirecting students’ feedback to department directors, and advocating for inclusive academic support to encompass students of varying learning abilities.
If elected, what sort of Officer can students expect you be?
I’m committed to empower students to build a community with diverse perspectives and recognise the multifaceted essence of university learning. This will entail cooperating closely with students, the administration and the faculty body. Most importantly, to attend to my cohort’s faculty rights and enhance faculty engagement.
Through this position, I aim to coordinate social events and academic forums to foster a collaborative academic environment with other representatives, to accentuate the interdisciplinary nature of social science within the faculty and beyond. Also, to propose lowering society membership fees and improve career opportunities with faculty career officers.
Why is this role important to you?
My prior and current experiences have reiterated to me that educational settings are a key impediment to realising students’ potential within academia. By acting as a mediator, I’m certain that my role as the faculty president can raise students’ engagement with staff to reshape institutional policies, hence the university’s academic culture.
Being an advocate for social justice, I hope to set a precedent and actualise my notions of inclusion and equity in the university environment and wider academia. I will champion for more representation and diversity within the faculty body to create an equitable academic environment. Therefore, to optimises students’ prospects and help them to thrive.
Ultimately, I also hope to utilise this opportunity to supplement and acquaint myself with leadership experience and further refine my team-building and communication skills within and outside such institutional settings.
What is your pitch to students?
With a team-oriented approach, I will use my experience in leadership, student-staff communication, and receptiveness to new ideas to bring about inclusivity, showcase the multifaceted dimensions of our disciplines, and enhance faculty representation. I strive to foster a more collaborative and diverse academic environment within and beyond our faculty.
