Tell students about yourself
Hi, I’m Alaina! I’m from London, I study English Literature and I’m passionate about both the study and the preservation of Arts and Humanities degrees within university. I love reading and writing (particularly poetry) and am hoping to get more involved with student magazines, but for now, I’m passing my time with Muay Thai and pottery as well as the occasional History of Art and Film event!
If elected, what sort of Officer can students expect you be?
I will be a hands-on officer who will work effectively and efficiently. The most important part of my role will be to engage with students directly and help with their academic challenges. I will approach this by making sure I am easily accessible to students and with the combination of my organisational skills, attention to detail and my approachable demeanour, I am guaranteed to make the role a success. I will approach change with an open mind and ensure all voices are heard and accounted for and I will consistently look for ways to improve the Arts and Humanities faculty.
Why is this role important to you?
This role is important to me because I’m passionate about the study of Arts and Humanities, I, myself currently studying a Humanities degree (English Literature) and am planning to continue to pursue academia after graduating. I want to provide advice and guidance to any students whether they want help with academic challenges or have feedback as to how the faculty can improve. I want to see a change in the acceptance and respect given to Arts and Humanities degrees and want to implement this change in Durham University by allowing a safe space for students to turn to with any struggles or ideas pertaining to the faculty. I care about the enthusiasm towards the study of Arts and Humanities and believe it should be celebrated as a faculty.
What is your pitch to students?
I care about Arts and Humanities both as a faculty, and the effect they have in society and on mental health- this will translate into the effort I put into my role. I understand what students want and will make sure all voices are heard. Your representation matters- vote Alaina!
