This year, what was previously the Kingsgate Bar and Cafe will open in the first term as a student lounge space, with free tea and coffee available for students who want to make the most of a comfy space and view of Kingsgate Bridge and the River Wear. We're sad that we can't run Kingsgate as a viable commercial cafe and bar space throughout term as the venue makes too great a financial loss, and we recognise that some students may be disappointed. However, we want our space to change and adapt to students' needs, and those are changing, so it's the right time to speak with students and adjust our offer in Kingsgate. 2026 will be Dunelm House's 60th birthday, and we're keen to reinvigorate the space for students, with students.
We want to say a huge thank you to the staff and student staff who have served so many students in the bar and cafe since the most recent iteration opened in 2019 (and reopened in 2022) - we're pleased that many of them have joined us as ASK assistants. We look forward to continuing to employ a range of students across the SU, in making our work happen for students.
