Students have raised concerns with us about changes to the Bill Bryson opening times for this term. Over the course of the week, we have been in discussions with the University about this, but they are unequivocal that this decision will not be reversed. This is not surprising given this week’s news, though we understand students will be nonetheless frustrated. There will be an opportunity for student consultation around longer-term operations. We will detail how students can contribute to this consultation when we know more.

We have made it clear to the University that the way this decision was communicated, at late notice, alongside the flaws in their contingency planning, was unacceptable and created needless confusion. The University will be issuing the revised details of alternative study space provisions to all students as soon as possible via colleges.

Durham University Business School is also open 24/7, though currently just for Business students. We've asked the University to amend this policy to accommodate all students' study requirements, in light of the Bill Bryson's closure.

Durham University has announced big budget cuts - read Durham SU's position on the impact on students.
