Suhaani Malik
International Officer Candidate (part-time)

Candidate Profile

Tell students about yourself

Hello everyone! My name is Suhaani Malik and I’m a first-year law student from Mumbai, India. At Durham, I’m actively involved in the Law Society, absolutely love writing for the Pro Bono Blog and am furthering my entrepreneurial spirit via the Women in Business Society. Beyond academics, I’m part of the Pilates Society, the International Students Association and the Indian Society. I enjoy reading, writing, table tennis, experimenting with cuisine and fashion, exploring new places and love to innovate and brainstorm over coffee.

If elected, what sort of Officer can students expect you be?

If elected, students can expect me to be an approachable and inclusive officer. I’m a strong leader who values collaboration and enjoys working closely with others to make them feel heard. My organisational and persuasive skills, along with a fair, firm but empathetic approach to decisionmaking, allow me to address diverse perspectives and ensure they’re incorporated effectively. I believe I am driven, committed, and passionate about innovation that creates change. I believe in learning from each other above all else and envision an environment where every international student can feel empowered and ‘at-home’. My goal is to achieve that.

Why is this role important to you?

Being an international student who left home and traveled thousands of miles out of my comfort zone, this role is deeply personal. I understand the challenges of embracing a new culture and environment. I remember how overwhelming it felt at first, and I want to ensure no one feels alone in their journey. Durham’s international initiatives helped me immensely, and I’d like to carry on this legacy. Whether it’s academic support, cultural integration, or simply making friends, I aim to create a supportive environment that makes the transition smoother and enhances the overall experience for every international student.

What is your pitch to students?

"How do I juggle studying, networking, events, working out, socialising, and still have fun?"

As an international student, I get it. Finding balance in a new place? Tough. But it doesn’t have to be.

With International Week, Speed-Friending, Student Hotlines, I want to make Durham a second home.
