Regulus Spriggs-White
Community Officer candidate

Candidate Profile

Tell students about yourself

I’m Regulus (he/him) and I’m a first gen Liberal Arts student from the South East UK with a passion for change. In the past, I have been on the executive committee for many college and SU societies including president of John Snow Cooking Society in my first year and welfare officer for the LGBT+ Association 2023/24 as well as working with university staff on the Trans and Nonbinary working group last year.

If elected, what sort of Officer can students expect you be?

As an officer, my approach aims to raise and champion student voices and enable transparency between students and the SU and encourage students to speak freely about their challenges and experiences. We make up the Durham community and because of this I want to see a more student-led direction for the SU in which every voice holds power. I aim to create productive opportunities for students to discuss their issues in this way and remain up to date with issues to address them as they arise.

Why is this role important to you?

Since the student community is the center of Durham as a whole I want to see change towards a positive student experience for all which enables wider engagement. I would highlight non-academic opportunities for students to make memories and grow on their own terms as well as tackling issues and barriers which may threaten this access.

This includes working with associations, other officers and college representatives in order to identify and address issues facing the student community directly and proactively. I aim to work alongside others to improve EDI frameworks, create more opportunities for students outside of academics and specific societies and to bring colleges together in a collaborative community with equal access to support and opportunities across colleges.

Additionally, I aim to reverse the process of students being priced out of Durham by creating comprehensive policies and support for the Cost of Living and Housing crises among other issues.

What is your pitch to students?

A vote for me is a vote for inclusive and accessible access to Durham community events for all and a student experience which leaves no one behind. A vote for growth. A vote for US. #DurhamIsUS
