Danish Asghar
Arts and Humanities Faculty President (part-time) Candidate

Candidate Profile

Tell students about yourself

I’m Danish, a first-year Visual Arts and Film student from West Yorkshire. I’m the Social Media Director of the Foreign Affairs Society and Welfare Officer for Collingwood College. I’m passionate about student welfare and creating a supportive community. I also volunteer through societies like UNICEF, working to make a positive impact beyond university. Giving back and supporting others has always been important to me. :)

If elected, what sort of Officer can students expect you be?

If elected, I will be an officer who drives meaningful change and fosters active student involvement. I’ll introduce interactive student led projects like think tanks, creative campaigns, and collaborative events to directly shape the accessibility of the faculty. My approach will be centred on collaboration, ensuring every student has a platform to contribute and be heard. With my experience in welfare and leadership, I aim to break down barriers, address the unique challenges faced by arts and humanities students, and create a faculty environment where participation feels smooth and effective.

Why is this role important to you?

This role is important to me because I believe every student should feel supported and empowered in their university journey. As someone who values inclusivity, I want to see Durham become more accessible for all students, especially those in their first year. The transition to university can be overwhelming, and I aim to help bridge that gap by ensuring new students feel welcomed and equipped to succeed. I want to advocate for resources and initiatives that specifically address the unique challenges students in the arts and humanities face, from academic pressures to mental health support. Change is needed to make this faculty a more inclusive, supportive environment where every student’s voice is heard and valued, regardless of background or experience.

What is your pitch to students?

Vote for me to improve academic support for arts and humanities students, ensure clearer communication between faculty and students, and create more opportunities for student-led projects. Empowering voices, improving transitions, driving change—let’s make this faculty work for you and tackle the challenges that matter most.
